Hi Music Fans,
Thank you for applying to join our production team for the launch of one our new music magazines. In preparation for our next planning meeting you are all being asked to respond to the following tasks.
We are aiming to produce new weekly and monthly music magazines aimed at an increasingly sophisticated audience, who get their music information from a variety of different sources, including the internet.
Music magazines are currently declining in sales so we need to come up with titles that are exciting and original to cater for the demands of today’s music fans. We are considering a range of ideas representing the whole range of currently popular music genres but are looking for something commercially viable in today’s competitive market.
Prepare your responses to the following tasks ready for our next planning meeting. Remember to keep your ideas clear and to the point.

- Use blue or black ink or ballpoint pen for your written work.
- Attempt all four tasks.
- You may not take any of your preparation or previous work into the exam.
- Write your full name and teachers name at the top of every page.
- When you begin a new task, start a new page, and write the task number at the top.
- Used lined paper for Task 1, 2 and 3 for any rough working. Cross through any work you do not want marked.
- For Task 4 use A3 paper.
- The topic area for this paper is The Music Press.
- The maximum mark for this paper is 100.
- You are recommended to do the tasks in the order given.
- You should use drawing and colouring materials as appropriate.
- You are advised to use fine-liners and rulers.
- You may make sketches and diagrams which you think will explain your answers.
- You will be strongly rewarded for any information you include from your own independent research on a topic.

- We need to consider our rivals. What are the key features of two different current popular music magazines and who are their audiences.
- We need to understand why some music magazines succeed and others fail. The demise of Smash Hits in February of this year sent shockwaves though the industry. Briefly outline the history of the title and explain why you think it failed.

- An audience profile including the genre(s) of music they enjoy
- Style of writing and mode of address

- An outline of how the magazine will be relevant in the digital age.
